Four Reasons Why Women Should Train Muay Thai
Muay Thai is a fast paced and exciting sport that has rapidly grown in popularity over the past years. More and more people are jumping into Muay Thai not only to learn an incredibly effective form of self defense, but also to get a great workout, meet new people, and to challenge themselves in new ways.
Often, women want to try Muay Thai but find stepping into a gym to begin training a bit intimidating. Fortunately, you will find a welcoming and encouraging atmosphere for women at John Wai Martial Arts, and you will quickly fall in love with this thrilling sport. Here, whether you are a brand new beginner or you have trained extensively before, you will find many other females who are along for the journey and are ready to train alongside you. Here are four reasons why women should train Muay Thai.
1) Self Defense – Muay Thai is a highly practical form of self defense. It is known as “The Art of Eight Limbs,” and focusses around striking with the hands, elbows, knees, and legs. Women will learn how to control the space around them utilizing long range strikes, such as kicks, to prevent attackers from getting too close. Further, women will learn how to manage themselves if someone gets too close, utilizing elbows and punches to stop an attacker.
Muay Thai also utilizes the clinch and sweeps, giving participants and understanding of some grappling principles. This, again, makes for a well rounded self defense approach. Learning to sweep someone down to the ground while you stay standing is not only incredibly exciting to learn, but is also an excellent way for women to deal with an attacker in a self defense situation. The clinch (imagine having control of someone’s head), allows women to control the posture of an attacker while creating opportunities to strike using knees, lead into a sweep, or even move and push the attacker away to create space.
2) Burns Calories and Builds Muscles – Muay Thai offers an amazing workout. There is never a time where you won’t leave a Muay Thai class without sweating. In a typical Muay Thai class, you may burn as many as 600 calories. Not only that, but you will be building muscles at the same time.
The resistance created while striking on a bag or pad will create well-defined shoulder and arm muscles, as well as strong legs and butt muscles. As you turn your body to strike, whether it be punches or kicks, your core will be engaged and activated, which will develop your stomach muscles. Intentional breathing in Muay Thai is also excellent for core work.
3) Simple to Learn – Muay Thai is a sport in which you can quickly feel like you are able to fully participate. It is fairly simple, with obvious progressions as you advance, but allows new participants to quickly understand what’s going on and jump right in. This often allows women to feel less anxious about learning the sport, and allows them to relax and just have fun with the process.
4) Make New Friends – Muay Thai offers a great community of people. Women will find new friends and a new community that is quick to support, encourage, and help them succeed. Finding the right Muay Thai community that is welcoming and supportive of women training is important, and you will absolutely find that type of community here at John Wai Martial Arts. Here, you’ll find people eager to help you grow, see you succeed, challenge you, and have fun alongside you as you train and get a great workout.
